Brow Aftercare

Permanent Makeup Aftercare

Please be sure to read thoroughly and reach out with any questions or concerns;

Outside healing can take between 5-14 days. Your PMU Brows can shrink in size and fade & soften in colour/shape between 30-60%. This percentage varies on an individual basis. A mandatory 6-8 week touch up is required for best results. That being said, some clients do not require a touch up.

Upon leaving your appointment, residual swelling, bleeding and lymph fluid is normal. Gently blot the area with a clean tissue or paper towel to absorb and remove any of the excess lymph fluid and/or bleeding. Please do this every 5 minutes for the full day until the leaking has stopped. This will prevent the fluids from hardening which will cause more scabbing later on in the healing process.

The treated area may appear uneven, dry, itchy, tender, red, dark in pigment tone and irritated. Please do NOT touch the treated area. These symptoms will dissipate each day and vary on an individual basis.

Avoid water on the treated area within the first 24 hours. After the 24 hour period you may shower as normal (try to avoid long/hot or steaming showers for 3-5 days). Let the water fall on the treated area naturally; Do not touch the brows. After the 24 hour period please also gently wash the area 1-2 times daily with the brow shampoo provided for 10-14 days. You may pump the foam shampoo directly onto the brows and use your fingers to massage in gentle circular motions. Please ensure you wash your hands PRIOR (never touch dirty hands to the brows while they are healing). You may rinse and pat dry with a CLEAN towel or paper towel. Please keep any left over shampoo for your touch up appointment.

If you have OILY SKIN, a DRY HEAL is recommended. No creams or ointments on the area. If the area AROUND the treated area is dry, you may apply a thin layer of non-scented natural cream.

If you have DRY/NORMAL SKIN, a WET HEAL is recommended. Use a very small amount (rice grain) of the ointment provided 1-3 times a day for 10-14 days.

Please keep any left over ointment for your touch up appointment and again be sure to apply with either clean fingers or a disposable applicator.

Avoid any facials, exfoliating, Botox, fillers, chemical peels or any other skin/medical aesthetics on or around the area for 14 days post procedure.

Avoid sweating and swimming (including gym activities) for a MINIMUM of 3-5 days post procedure. Sweat can present risk of infection and/or poor or delayed healing. It can also alter the pigment tone. To reduce the risk, it is ideal and encouraged to avoid sweating/swimming for the entirety of the outside healing (10-14 days).

Avoid direct sunlight or tanning for 4 weeks post procedure as it can risk poor/delayed healing, scarring and can change your pigment tone. Big sunglasses can be helpful however the sun shines from above so though it may not seem like it at eye level your brows may still be exposed! It is best to wear a visor or hat as opposed to glasses. After the 4-week mark, be sure to use proper sun protection on the area (all year round, not just in summer) as the sun can still change your pigment tone. It is recommended to find an SPF of 55 and above with Zinc or Titanium Dioxide in it for extra protection.

Avoid any makeup, sunscreen or skin products directly on or close to the area until the outside is completely healed (10-14 days).

Be extra cautious with any products used around the area. Leave extra space and avoid any other products used that had been previously dipped into with dirty fingers as it presents risk for cross-contamination and therefore, risks infection.

Use a clean pillowcase (silk is strongly recommended) daily for at least the first 72 hours and try to sleep on your back as much as possible for the duration of the healing period. If possible, it it recommended to use a clean pillowcase for the full 10-14 days.

DO NOT pick, scratch or rub the treated area as it can risk scarring, loss of pigment, poor retention, asymmetry and more. Let any scabbing, flaking or dry skin fall off naturally. Be especially careful (gentle) during your flaking period when you are washing your brows.

Healed results may vary on an individual bases depending on your skin type, lifestyle and aftercare. Since we do not have control over your healing and retention process, you may find the need to wear brow makeup (pencil or powder) even after the healed results. An annual touch up is common to maintain your desired look.

Please reach out as well as contact a physician at the first sight of abnormal swelling or infection.

Long Term Aftercare (Once brows are fully healed):

  • As mentioned above, use sunscreen on your brows all year round
  • Avoid using anti-aging creams on/around the area or any products that claim to lighten, brighten, exfoliate, peel and/or remove age spots or freckles.
  • If you plan a skincare treatment (Chemical Peel, Facial Scrub, Microdermabrasion, etc.) advise your aesthetician to avoid the area.
  • Avoid these products on/around your PMU Brows:
    • Retinol
    • Retin-A
    • Hyaluronic acid
    • Lytic acid
    • Glycolic acid
    • Hydroquinone
    • Vitamin-C

** For best results and to ensure product does not migrate to the area, it is best to apply any of the above products where your crow’s feet are (beside your eyes) and below.
